ROBBERS STRIKE AT TWO MCDONALD'S RESTAURANTS
4 April 2008, 10:48 www.702.co.za/news
Two McDonald's restaurants have been robbed in Gauteng last night. In the first incident, one person has been shot and wounded at the outlet in Fourways, north of Johannesburg. It is understood a group of men stormed the restaurant and demanded money and cellphones from customers and staff. One of the suspects then shot a customer. A man who was there says it was a horrible experience. Police are also investigating an armed robbery after the McDonald's restaurant in the East Rand Mall in Boksburg was also robbed. It is understood three men held customers and staff up before fleeing with cash. No one was injured in that incident.

Tourism Industry Contribution on Government's National energy Saving Programme
Greetings to all of you from the RASA and the TBCSA. We trust that the New Year has gone off on a great start and that business is picking up nicely across our beautiful country despite some of the challenges we have been experiencing.
I trust that you have been following the national debate on the Eskom power outages and the various media statements made by TBCSA, SATSA and Fedhasa (just to mention a few) on this problem. Subsequent to the outcry from our sector, the national Department of Public Enterprises' Director General convened an urgent meeting with a few of our industry leaders. The objective of the meeting was for the DPE to brief our sector about the state of power supply in the country and their plans to remedy/address the shortfall. The DPE also used the meeting to gain an understanding of the effect of the power outages in our sector and to find ways in which we as a sector can play a role in addressing the problem.
In the end, we agreed that the Tourism industry through the TBCSA should do the following:-
1. Establish a Tourism Energy Saving Task Team consisting of DPE, DEAT and TBCSA to drive the sector's involvement government and Eskom's programme
2. The TBCSA in collaboration with all industry stakeholders to conduct an Energy Saving Audit within the tourism industry, i.e. our own energy saving initiatives to date since we have been in the forefront of such noble initiatives as part of our commitment to the global Responsible Tourism campaign.
3. The TBCSA in collaboration with all industry stakeholders to Solicit and collate the tourism private sector's input on the recently launched Energy Efficient Initiative which is due for implementation on 1st April 2008. Amongst others, the plan requires the tourism industry to reduce electricity consumption by between 20% and 25%.
What Assistance Do We Require From You?
In this regard, we would like to solicit your support and collaboration in achieving the above mentioned initiatives. Please can you embark on a campaign amongst your members to help us collate all the information as per the above mentioned tasks. We have THREE WEEKS to submit a formal document to the DPE and DEAT in respect of the above and we thus request your collaboration.
Click to view the following documents:
a. Government's National Energy Efficiency Programme
b. Energy Efficiency Opportunities in the Lodging Industry – examples of how we can achieve this

Minimum wage impacts restaurants - Friday 16 November 2007
The introduction of minimum wages for the hospitality sector in July had made the cost of labour unaffordable, forcing companies to fire staff, the Restaurant Association of South Africa (Rasa) said yesterday. Wendy Alberts, the chief executive of Rasa, said the statistics of people who had lost their jobs were in a document that the association had prepared and handed over to labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana in August. Alberts refused to disclose the numbers, saying the association preferred to discuss them with the government first. However, she said Rasa's efforts to contact Mdladlana had been frustrated, as he had not responded to the group. "We have also had customers complaining about our services because instead of having 10 waiters on the floor, we now have two," said Alberts. Ben Filmmater, the chief executive at Mugg & Bean, said that since the company started complying with the act, labour costs had increased 20 percent.
Filmmater said Mugg & Bean had to reduce the number of working hours for staff, to avoid job losses. "This process has also created imbalances at the workplace," he said. "Because the guy on the floor is now making a lot more than the guy in the kitchen, because he is now getting a minimum wage and tips, yet the kitchen guy is the one that actually has a skill." Filmmater agreed that customer service had been compromised due to the act. Alberts said Rasa, which has 1 700 members, was now consulting with lawyers to take the case to the constitutional court. This move followed failed attempts to discuss the matter with the minister. She said the association would give Mdladlana until early next year before exploring the legal route. Mdladlana said in May that hospitality workers would have to be paid a minimum wage of R1 650, while employers with 10 employees or fewer must pay staff R1 480 a month. The hourly rate for casual workers would be R7.59. |

Take center stage at Infochef 2007
Infochef – the annual conference of the South African Chefs Association – is only months away! This year, after careful consideration of the feedback received from delegates in attendance last year, we have sourced and will be hosting motivational, inspirational and experienced guest speakers to lend their expertise, if only for a day, to the hundreds of delegates who flock to Infochef.
Infochef is all about honing one's knowledge and skills as a chef and manager, networking with members of the industry and advancing the profession. From students, apprentices and commis chefs to senior chefs and now for the second year, F&B Managers, this annual three-day industry-related educational conference has fast become the industry conference event of the year!
The aim of this year’s conference, to be held from 21 to 23 August, is to provide the local and international hospitality and foodservice communities with an opportunity to learn about industry education, development and management in South Africa. We will explore the findings and commentary of keynote speakers, industry leaders, educators and industry practitioners alike.
Call 011 482 7250 for further information or email your questions to suzanne@saca.co.za Keep an eye on the website for all the conference details as they become available.

RIP-OFF REPORTS RUBBISHED |
| |
The restaurant industry is by and large much too sensible to argue with the media, but a survey has shown that most of the reports, allegations and commentary about restaurant prices were rubbish. |
| |
|
- |
Key findings: Food and beverages, March 2007 |
| |
The total income generated by the food and beverages industry in the first quarter of 2007 amounted to R6 236,0 million. This was an increase of 14,1% (R772,4 million) compared with the first quarter of 2006. The increase was due to a 15,3% (R706,1 million) increase in income from food sales, an 8,9% (R62,7 million) increase in income from bar sales and a 2,2% (R3,6 million) increase in other income. |
