Sunday Times Celebrates South Africa's Great Tastes with a new award

The search has begun for South Africa’s best and most innovative producers of homemade food products with the launch of the Sunday Times Great Taste Awards. The Awards, which are open to all small, micro and medium enterprises (SMME's) involved in the manufacture of South African food products, are designed to celebrate and recognize the wealth of excellent homemade and home-grown products being produced across the country by dedicated small entrepreneurs.

To ensure the widest possible participation, the awards invite entries in 12 categories, with a R10 000 cash prize for the winner in each of these. The categories are as follows:

  • Dairy
  • Olives, pastes and spreads
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Cured meat and charcuterie
  • Chocolate and confectionary
  • Honey, jams and preserves
  • Condiments
  • Snacks
  • Drinks: alcoholic and non-alcoholic
  • Dried spices and herb products (including blends and rubs)
  • Organic products
  • Other.

The Sunday Times hopes that the Great Taste Awards will inspire the people and enterprises involved in growing, manufacturing and creating innovative products that have the potential to stimulate the food industry and our economy.

Winners of the Great Taste Awards will be announced at a function at the first Sunday Times Food Show, which will take place in association with Pick 'n Pay in Johannesburg from 5 to 8 July 2007. The first Sunday Times Chef of the Year and Young Chefs of the Year (qualified and unqualified) will also be announced at the same function.

The entry form, details on how to enter, and more information on the awards can be found at www.sundaytimes.co.za/foodshow
