RASA POLICIES

The Restaurant Association of South Africa has, along with key specialists in the industry, developed a number of policies with clear and measurable guidelines to assist the industry in self-regulation and standardisation. Restaurants that comply with the guidelines for the various policies may display the relevant accreditation on their premises.

Properties that adhere to the RASA policies are allowed to display a specially adapted version of South African Tourism’s Welcome logo and will be listed as an accredited restaurant on www.southafrica.net, the official website of South African Tourism,Listings on this website will also carry the various RASA policy endorsements and will be plotted on the SA Tourism GPS database which is supplied to various role players in the digital mapping and navigation arena.
Creating awareness and educating the public on the minimum standards that should be expected from the restaurant industry is a key element to the RASA policies programme.

RASA is concerned with the safety, security; hygiene and well being of all children at kids play areas within all restaurants and eating establishments in SA
In order to protect the integrity of all restaurants and ensure child safety - RASA is accrediting all their members with RASA PLAY SAFE ACCREDITATION
Provided the restaurant or eating establishment adheres to the policy
The policy ensures that play areas are of a minimum size and must be enclosed with a latchable lockable one way entry gate, a register for entry and exit and that the equipment is safe and meets certain sabs approved specifications, cctv for monitoring the play area must be available along with a RASA trained child minder who has both First aid and CPR certification. suitable soft landing flooring and correct hygiene facilities ie hand washing , disposable wipes and paper towels areas need to be disinfected on a daily basis and the equipment maintained and the necessary disclaimers are displayed
A RASA assessor will assist in monitoring restaurants maintain the policy and will inspect sites on a regular basis
Although the policy is not law, RASA feels that the policy makes for good restaurant practice and for patron and public awareness and encourages participation of all members that have Play areas. Minimum legislation requirements are included in the Act and form part of the policy.
RASA has established procedures and policies for the installation, maintenance and set up of a safe kids play area in restaurants
RASA has defined the roles and responsibilities of the Restaurant, Child minder, Parent and Child in order to ensure a safe environment for play is provided for kids
Definition of a policy-a policy is a deliberate plan of action to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes, the purpose is :

  • To encourage patrons to only use RASA accredited play safe restaurants
  • To define the parameters that cater for a safe environment for the set up of kids play areas within restaurants
  • To define the responsibilities of the restaurant, play area attendants parents and kinds
  • To uplift play areas at restaurants to a minimum safety standard
  • To educate the public on Disclaimers
  • To improve the quality and safety of kids in all restaurants
  • To ensure all play area attendants are adequately trained and available to restaurants offering play areas to kids
